History

Kharon IX was the Reach's forge. Its volcanoes powered automated foundries that smelted the metal for half the colonies' megastructures. Workers lived in dense blocks behind blast walls; the foundries themselves are monumental: windowless concrete towers with glowing seams of furnace light. Ash falls constantly, softly, like grey snow.

Environment & biome

Gravity 1.3 g (a heavy "super-Earth"; everything feels slower and heavier)
Atmosphere Toxic: thick CO₂ with sulphur compounds. All habitats are sealed; workers wore filtered suits
Temperature 35 to 60 °C; hotter near the calderas
Terrain Basalt lava plains, obsidian fields, cinder cones and three active calderas; ash dunes in the lowlands
Sky Kharon, a swollen red giant, hangs three to four times wider than Earth's Sun; ash haze turns daylight rust-coloured
Heat and orbit Kharon IX was once a frozen outer world. When its star swelled into a red giant, the extra light thawed it, then baked it. Its own heavy, hot core drives the volcanism. No moons.
Weather Constant soft ashfall; hot dry winds; rare acid rain; regular tremors

Biome: ember moss. Terraforming was abandoned in the first decade, so nothing from Earth grows here. The only native life is ember moss: thermophilic mats that cling to warm vents and glow a faint orange in the dark. Workers considered it lucky. Since the Quiet, it has spread along the foundries' cooling channels.

Hazards: toxic air, tremors, ash storms that cut visibility to metres, and heat.

After the Quiet

Architecture

Architecture as machinery. The Combine built for mass, heat and toxic air: buildings are sealed, windowless and enormous, and they look like they could survive anything, because they had to.

Materials Black-brown cast concrete, heat-scorched steel, blocks of dark slag glass. No glass at ground level.
Forms Colossal windowless towers; tall blast walls; elevated conveyor bridges; stacked housing blocks sheltering behind the walls.
Windows and light Thin vertical slits glowing furnace orange; amber lamps along sealed walkways; red warning lights on chimneys.
Interiors Canteens and locker halls for shift workers; control rooms lit by ember-orange screens; airlocks everywhere.
After 50 years Ash dunes banked against every wall, ember moss glowing in the cooling channels, and the furnaces still lit.
Building type Notes
Foundry tower Windowless towers 200–600 m tall, their seams glowing with furnace light.
Blast-wall housing Dense worker blocks with tiny lit windows, sheltering behind 60 m concrete walls.
Conveyor bridge Elevated enclosed bridges carrying ore and ingots between towers.
Caldera plant Power stations built into live volcano rims, drawing heat straight from the magma.

Places

Vessels

Built by: Kharon Forge Combine. Ships are tools. The Combine built them in orbit from Kharon steel, to carry girders for a century without complaint. Nobody ever asked whether they were beautiful.

Silhouette Long and slab-sided: stacked rectangular cargo modules clamped along an exposed girder spine, a blunt armoured nose, no curves anywhere (the rounder Ember lifter, which has to fly through Kharon's thick air, is the one exception). Haulers run 400–900 m.
Hull Dark scorched steel, charcoal to black, with heat-tempered blue-black streaks near the drive section. Heavy external ribbing; no paint, no markings.
Lights Rows of small amber running lights along the spine; a faint furnace-orange glow from heat vents; one narrow bridge window glowing amber.
Details Huge docking clamps, folded cargo cranes, exposed pipes and girders, soot around every vent.
Interior glimpse Almost none: a slit bridge window, a lit crew corridor seen through a hatch.
After 50 years Ash drifted on every horizontal surface, rust streaks running down the slabs, vents still faintly warm.
Vessel type Notes
Ember-class ore hauler The workhorse: a 700 m spine of cargo modules. Ember Nine is one.
Ember lifter Surface-to-orbit freight, 180 m: a rounded riveted cargo hull with open bays of glowing ingots, loaded lying flat at the port. (See Cargo Port Ember.)
Forge tug Stubby, massively built, all engine and clamps; pushes haulers into dock.
Crew lander A blocky steel box on four heavy legs, for shift changes between orbit and the foundries.

Ground vehicles

Everything on Kharon IX moves sealed. The air is toxic, so every cab is pressurised and every window is small. Freight moves by rail; people move by crawler.

Look Colossal, armoured and riveted: dark scorched steel, sealed cabins with small round portholes, heavy treads or massive bogies, nothing streamlined.
Lights Amber portholes, amber headlamps, a faint furnace glow from engine vents.
After 50 years The automated ore trains still run their loops between the foundries and the cargo port. Crew crawlers sit parked in neat rows, ash piled on their roofs.
Vehicle type Notes
Ore train Elevated freight trains a kilometre long, hauling glowing ingots across the ash plains. Fully automated.
Crew crawler A tracked, sealed bus for shift workers; 40 seats, filtered air, heavy blast shutters.
Ash runner A small two-seat tracked buggy for inspections along the calderas.

Sound

The factories are still working and nobody is there. Heavy, hypnotic, faintly threatening, but never aggressive.

The worlds of the Reach are all tuned to the Hum, the note A. Kharon IX sings it in phrygian.
